“世界-中国”文化场域中的郭嵩焘使西形象

摘要:

郭嵩焘的形象,是在“世界-中国”文化场域中通过多元主体的叙事而完成构建的。借助《使西纪程》和《伦敦与巴黎日记》的自我书写,郭嵩焘完成了其清醒看世界的自我画像。而西文报刊则对郭嵩焘外交活动的全面报道和评论,将其塑造为一个不同于一般中国官员的“他者”形象。《使西纪程》毁版后,原本支持郭嵩焘的《申报》为了实现商业利益、顺应清流舆论而制造了画像争议,而《万国公报》则始终正面维护郭嵩焘的“星使弁冕”的形象。只有借助自我与他者书写的差异与中西报刊舆论的交流与对话,进入“世界-中国”交流互动场域中,才能跳脱单一叙事,有助于更加全面深刻地理解郭嵩焘使西及其形象建构的复杂多元背景和思想文化意义。

Abstract:

The image of Guo Songtao was constructed through the narration of multiple subjects in the “world-China” cultural field.Through self-writing in Records of the Mission to the West and Diaries of London and Paris, Guo Songtao completed a self-portrait of his clear-eyed view of the world. However, through the comprehensive reports and comments on Guo Songtao's diplomatic activities in foreign language press, Guo Songtao was shaped as an “other” image different from ordinary Chinese officials. After the printing plate of Records of the Mission to the West was destroyed, Shun Pao created the controversy of the portrait in order to conform to the commercial interests of the Qingliu public opinion, while Chinese Globe Magazine always maintained the image of Guo Songtao's “Star Envoy” positively. With the help of the differences and intertextuality between self and others, the communication and dialogue between Chinese and Western newspapers and public opinions, and entering the“world-China” communication and interaction field, we can get rid of the single narrative and understand more comprehensively and profoundly the complex and diversified background and modern significance of Guo Songtao's mission to the West and his image construction.
